A US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq while supporting Operation Epic Fury missions over Iran. All six crew members were confirmed killed after rescue teams recovered the remains. CENTCOM stated the loss was not due to hostile or friendly fire, though the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said the incident happened "over friendly territory in western Iraq." A second KC-135 supporting the same mission was damaged but landed safely. The deaths brought the total US military casualties in the war to 13. The aircraft was from the 940th Air Refueling Wing based at Beale Air Force Base, California.
