Iranian Deputy Intelligence Minister Akbar Ghaffari was killed in joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran during the morning strike wave of Day 16, according to Iranian news agency ILNA. Ghaffari had previously served as political-security deputy governor of East Azerbaijan province, and was at a Ministry of Intelligence facility in Tehran when it was struck. Four staff members were also wounded. The killing marks a significant blow to Iran's domestic intelligence apparatus, which oversees counter-intelligence, political monitoring, and internal security operations. His funeral was subsequently held in his home city of Tabriz. Iran's intelligence ministry confirmed his death without further operational details. The targeting of senior intelligence officials represents an intensification of the US-Israeli campaign to decapitate Iran's security leadership on Day 16.
